Moving house certainly isn't easy, but with enough preparation you can have a stress-free moving day. Take note of these top tips to help your move run smoothly!
Your planning should start several weeks before you move, when you decide exactly what to take with you to your new home. Take a walk around your house including the garden, attic and cellar and make a note of what to take and what to leave behind. For those items you want to keep, decide where to put them in your new home. When it comes to packing everything up you'll know how to label your boxes and everything will end up in the right place.
Moving is a fantastic excuse to throw away unwanted possessions, so once you've made your list you can set about clearing things out. Whether it's giving them away, selling them on eBay or taking them to the tip, getting rid of unwanted items means you have less to pack and less to worry about on moving day.
Sort out the logistics of your move well in advance. You may know when the David Dale moving truck is meant to arrive, but have you arranged for childcare for the kids? Do you have somewhere to stay overnight and is your car up for the journey? Make sure you have all this worked out well in advance, with a rough timetable to stick to if you've got to pick the kids up during the day.
You'll obviously need to transfer your services like water, gas etc to your new home, but don't forget about other things like your doctor, dentist, driving licence and even mobile phone contract. Any service you use where an address is required will need updating at some point and the sooner you do it, the sooner you can tick it off the list.
If you're doing your own packing it's good to start as early as possible. That means buying all your packing materials and wrapping up things you don't use first. Of course, you can take away the hassle by letting our expert packers help. We can either supply the right packing materials (like wardrobe boxes and mattress sleeves) or pack everything for you.
One really important task for the week before you move is cleaning out your kitchen cupboards. Throw away all those out-of-date food packets and plan your last meals in the house so you won't have lots of perishable food left over on moving day.
A couple of days before you move, clean out your fridge. It will need wiping inside and your freezer will need defrosting, especially if you're taking them with you.
Buy some food to take on moving day - tea, juice, biscuits and sandwiches are a good choice! Also make sure you have your first dinner and breakfast planned in your new home so you can relax for a bit before unpacking.
The night before moving day, pack your toiletries and a few clothes to see you through the first day in your new home. You'll take these with you in the car along with anything else you simply can't live without. If there's anything you want unloading first, make sure you mark it so the movers know to pack it last!
It really is all in the preparation, so follow this advice to take the stress out of moving.
